‘Why is Trump Allowed Back on Facebook, and Will He Return?’
The company that owns Facebook and Instagram has said former President Donald Trump’s risk to public safety has significantly decreased in the last two years, and that he’ll be allowed back on the platforms.
Trump was kicked off Meta’s social media platforms after his followers stormed the Capitol in January 2021, and the company declared him a risk, but, one that they would re-assess after two years.
The two years are up, and the former president will get his accounts back in the coming weeks.
But before he’s allowed back on the platforms, Meta have said they’ll be working to roll out new rules that could limit the former president’s actions.
This could include blocking certain posts, restricting other users from sharing them, and stopping them from appearing on other people’s feeds, as well as not allowing him to run ads.
In previous campaigns, Trump has spent hundreds of millions on targetted Facebook ads.
In the aftermath of January 6th, 2021, Trump was also banned from Twitter, YouTube and Snapchat too, causing him to establish his own social media site – Truth Social.
According to US campaign group Media Matters, nearly half of the posts on his Truth Social account in the weeks after the midterm elections pushed baseless election fraud claims or amplified QAnon accounts or content.
If Trump uses Facebook and Instagram in the same way, half of his posts should be blocked or restricted.
With this in mind, plus the success of his own social media platform being down to his activity on it – it’s uncertain whether he’ll turn his back on Truth Social to return to Facebook.
